I have been talking about technology and board members for some time. There is a correlation between age and tech ability. Typically the younger a person is the more comfortable they are with social media, video and remote meeting technology. Of course this is not always the case and there are exceptions to every rule.
Organizations need to have board members who are tech literate in order to understand the current business climate and to see business risks arising from technology use. It can be more efficient to have board meetings using technology such as Skype or Zoom, but this will not work if the board member does not have a computer or cannot figure out how to use the meeting software. When we are building the skills matrix for board members we should be sure to include the tech skills that your organization needs from their board members.
