Claiming Medical Expenses on Your Tax Return

Every year I remind people of a few things that will help save personal income taxes. Medical expenses are an area where taxpayers can overlook items.

First of all, ask your pharmacy, chiropractor, and psychologist for an annual summary of your expenses for 2018. If you have a list, you won’t be missing any expenses that you could have claimed because you lost the individual receipt for that visit. Don’t forget that you can claim the premiums you pay for, medical and dental insurance, as well as the medical insurance portion of any trip insurance you buy. If you have driven more than 40 km each way for medical treatment then you could be making a claim for mileage on your personal tax return.
