Does your board have job descriptions or role definitions? Few volunteer boards have set aside time to develop role definitions for their board members.
If everyone on a board is responsible for something happening then it is the same as no one being responsible. Time will be wasted in co-ordinating efforts of multiple people if there is not a clear understanding of who in in charge.
Questions to be answered include;
Is it clear which responsibilities are those of the chair, the secretary, the treasurer, etc.?
Whose job is it to develop the meeting agenda?
Who is responsible for the schedule of meetings?
Who speaks on behalf of the organization?
Who talks to the auditor… you get the idea.
If it is unclear who is responsible for certain tasks – these tasks may not be done, or may be duplicated. Put a little time into defining roles and responsibilities and your volunteers time will be spent more wisely.
