Discuss Issues, Not Personalities — Or Why Trump is a Disaster as a Board Member

We continue to see bad governance coming out of the United States.

In every case when there is criticism of a Trump comment or policy – he fires back with an attack on the individual. This is bad governance, among other things. (It is also childish and unappealing in a leader.)

When we meet as a board we are discussing issues, not the personalities of the board members. So if a board member says “I don’t agree with you,” the correct response is “Why is that?” The correct response is not “You are a jerk, no one likes you and you should resign from the board.”

Board chairs need to make it clear to all members that there will be no tolerance for the kind of behavior that attacks personalities. We are at the boardroom table to discuss issues.
