Do You Have What it Takes to Chair a Board Meeting?

I have talked before about the characteristics of board members. This week, I am talking about the characteristics of the board chairperson. This person needs to be able to control the meeting. Which means they need to be firm but fair. The board chair should make sure that the meetings are a place where all board members feel free to express their opinions without fear of personal attack!

In most groups the board chair does not participate in the discussion, they facilitate it and they only vote in the event of a tie. The board chair keeps the discussions on track. If your group is having meetings that appear to be longer than necessary, it is up to the chairperson to find out why and fix it.
