How often does your board evaluate their performance? Is there a time period, perhaps annually? What do you consider? I like the following questions.
- Do we know what we are doing?
- Do we stick to our Strategic Plan?
- Are we making progress in achieving the goals set by the organization?
- Do we behave ourselves?
- Do we have the right people on the board?
- Are we effective?
You can establish some metrics around each of these questions, such as, how many times did we have quorum this year? Do we have any vacancies on the board? The strategic plan should be set up in such a way that progress can be measured. We know that what gets measured gets done, so if you set out to measure the performance of the board, this performance will improve.
