FIERCE (Curious and Committed). Canada 150 Recommendation #131

Tuesday’s= Starting a Business

Curious

A business owner must be curious. They must wonder if there is a better way to do something. For example, they might be interested in seeing if there are customers in a different location, or seeing what other products might work for customers. Innovative ideas come out of being curious. Innovation will help you make more money. If your business is able to solve a problem for customers in a way that no one else has—then you are going to be successful. A natural curiosity is an important skill. Being interested in what your customers have to say is part of that and will be useful. Really listening to people is a big first step in understanding them. Understanding your customers enables you to anticipate and meet their needs.

Committed—Family Support

Some of the things you try to do will not work. You will make mistakes. It takes a while to get a business up to speed. In the meantime, you have to keep going. Many business owners quit before they should. It can take up to five years for a business to become successful. In the meantime, you have to be confident that it is going to be successful, even on the days when that does not look likely.

If you have a family, they need to believe in you. As we discussed in the first chapter, family support is very important. If you cannot find support with your family, or if you don’t have a family, you do need to locate some advisers who will be cheerleaders for you. Everyone needs someone who believes in them.

You might also need family support in the form of funding or time (for example, your family might need to perform some tasks for you). It would be great if your whole family was as excited about your business idea as you are. There is a saying that no one ever got rich working for someone else. The opportunity for your business to do well and make you rich exists and your family will benefit.

While you are working these long hours and being focused on the business, you do not need someone complaining that you are never home. It is in the family’s best interest for the business to succeed.
