Four Ways To Protect Yourself Online. Canada 150 Recommendation #43

Friday’s= Computer Security

The Equifax breach is the latest example of data being accessed by the wrong people. What can you do?

The first thing that you can do when you hear of a data breach is to change your passwords. If fraudsters, also known as bad actors, have hacked your passwords then you should change them right away.

My four things to do to protect yourself online:

1.Have you considered using a password manager? A password manager program creates and saves passwords for all of the sites and apps where you will use them. The only thing you have to do is remember the password to the manager.

2. You should have an anti-virus software program installed and you should keep it up-to-date. New releases should be installed promptly.

3.You should monitor your bank accounts and credit cards at least weekly. Online banking apps allow you to look at what is going on in your bank accounts easily.

4.Consider alerts — Ask your credit card company to set up alerts on your spending. I get a notification from American Express on my IPad every time that my card is used. If you see something weird you are on it right away.

Implement all four of these ideas and you will be safer in all your online activities.
