Talk to Your Executor

One of the “accounting jokes” that I tell involves making sure that the executor of your will understands your wishes. The joke goes like this. What if there is a hereafter? Do you want to spend it wishing that you had explained something in your will better?  Now I do appreciate that accounting humour is a pretty low standard for funny.

Many people are reluctant to talk about their will and I have been told that humans do not have a way to process their own death. This might explain why so few people have prepared a will.  Your will needs an executor and you need to explain to them what you want done so that if there is any interpretation required in following your will, they will know what you wanted. Talk to your executor soon – talking about it will not hasten your demise.
