This week my accounting firm Peverill & Associates Inc, celebrates its 30th year in operation. I left the international firm where I was a senior manager upon the birth of my second child. At the time, accounting firms were a bad choice for a women with small children. I hear that much has changed in that regard.
I talk to new business owners frequently through my speaking business and meetings with my own clients. I am often asked, how do you make a business successful? There is, of course, no magic that works for everyone. I do believe that it is important to be offering a service or selling a product that people need frequently. Think coffee. I also think that it is crucial to be doing work that you enjoy. One of the things that I say to my new business owners is that if you have created a job for yourself that you hate, then you are an idiot. You can get a job that you hate in many places, you do not need to make one for yourself!
So, two tips — if you want a business that can last for 30 years, consider doing work you enjoy for customers that need you often.
