The Canadian government is patterning their tax message after the tactics that Donald Trump used to divide the USA and get elected. I expect that we will see more of this type of behavior from politicians since it is working so well for The Donald.
The recent tax proposals have been explained to the general public using “facts” which could be characterized as “fake.” We have repeatedly heard tax experts state that the numbers being thrown around by the federal government are wrong. We are told that it is not true that a business owner making over $250,000 a year pays less tax than an employee who makes $50,000 as has been stated repeatedly. It is not true that the new rules only target “wealthy” Canadians. The new rules will affect every incorporated business in Canada, to their detriment. The federal government talks about helping the middle class – yet there are millions of middle class business owners who will be paying more tax.
Trudeau is also fanning the flames of division. Keep telling Canadians that business owners are tax cheats and that doctors are not paying their fair share of income tax and we are going to end up with the same kind of polarization that we see so much of in the United States.
Not so long ago, then President Obama said that the “World needs more Canada.” I believe this to be true – I don’t believe Canada needs more Trump.
