Have you ever heard the explanation, “We just can’t find any qualified candidates?”
We hear this when someone is wondering why there are no women, or visible minorities or gay people on a board. When someone is asking about the diversity in a group.
This is a standard explanation but it is not right. Boards can’t find people who are different from them because they are not looking in different places.
Maybe the guys on the board, don’t know any qualified women, but this does not mean there are no qualified women out there. You have to look beyond your own contact list to find people.
