Budgets and actual results, there are lots of questions when we do this comparison. When we create budgets and then compare the results to this budget, often there is a difference in the results. This is no surprise as there are very few reliable psychics available during the budget process. However, when we see that revenue has fallen short of our budget, or we see that expenses have exceeded our budget, we want to know who was responsible. Whose number is it?
With expenses it is easier to decide who owns the number, who makes the advertising decisions, whose was responsible for events, who negotiated for the website, you get the idea. As much as possible accountability should be established for each item on a budget. There is a saying, “If everyone is responsible, then no one is responsible,” and we don’t want that.
